Choosing your S-level
ZYN grades its pouches on a numbered scale from S1 upward. The number describes strength relative to the size of the pouch, which is why a mini and a slim carrying the same S number do not hold the same milligrams. Read the format and the number together and the range makes sense immediately.
| Level | Per pouch | Format | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| S1 | About 1.5 mg | Mini | First pouch |
| S2 | About 3 mg mini, 6 mg slim | Mini and Slim | First pouch |
| S3 | About 9 mg | Slim | Settled preference |
| S4 | About 6 mg mini, 11 mg slim | Mini and Slim | Settled preference |
| S5 | About 13.5 mg | Slim | Experienced only |
| S6 | Above S5, the range ceiling | Slim | Experienced only |
If this is your first pouch, start at S1 or S2 in the mini format. Nothing is lost by beginning gently, and a great deal of the first-time discomfort people describe comes from starting three levels too high. Milligram figures for other brands sit in the PouchSpot strength index, and the reasoning behind the ladder is in the strength guide.
The walkthrough, step by step
1. Tap the can before opening
Hold the tin upright and give the lid two or three firm taps. This settles the pouches downward so they do not spill when the lid comes off, and it separates any that have pressed together in transit. Then twist the lid off rather than prising it.
2. Place it under your upper lip
Take one pouch between finger and thumb, lift your upper lip and slide it in flat against the gum. Aim slightly off centre, roughly above a canine tooth, rather than directly under your nose. Off to one side it sits flatter, is far less visible and is easier to ignore. Give it a light press with your tongue to settle it.
3. Leave it for 20 to 40 minutes
Then do nothing. The pouch needs a minute or two to wet through before flavour appears, and moving it about with your tongue only shortens its life and irritates the gum. Twenty to forty minutes is the usual window, and ZYN states up to sixty on the can. For a first pouch, ten to fifteen minutes is plenty. Timing across brands is covered in how long nicotine pouches last.
4. No spitting
ZYN is a white, tobacco-free pouch and releases very little liquid. Saliva is swallowed normally, which is precisely why the format works at a desk, in a car or on a train. If a pouch does feel wet, that is a moisture question rather than a technique one, explained in dry versus moist pouches.
5. Dispose of it in the lid
Every ZYN can has a sealed upper compartment for used pouches. Drop the spent one in, close the lid and empty it into a bin later. Nothing needs wrapping in a napkin, and pouches should never go down a drain.
What the first time feels like
Expect a tingle. A prickling or gently warm sensation under the lip in the first few minutes is the ordinary response to the pouch settling against the gum, and it eases as the pouch softens. Flavour arrives before anything else does. If the tingle stays uncomfortable rather than fading, take the pouch out and go a level lower next time. That is a normal adjustment.
Some people notice a light-headed feeling early on, particularly at a higher strength than they needed. It passes within minutes and is described in what a nicotine buzz is. Less welcome reactions such as hiccups, a dry mouth or gum sensitivity are set out honestly in nicotine pouch side effects. Nicotine is addictive, and the German federal risk assessment of nicotine pouches and a scoping review in Nicotine and Tobacco Research are the clearest published summaries of what is known about the category.
Before your first pouch
Sit down, have water nearby and pick a quiet half hour rather than a busy one. The beginners guide covers the whole first sitting, and the pouch finder suggests a strength and flavour in a couple of minutes.
Mini or Slim
ZYN is unusual in running both formats deeply. A mini is around 30 by 8 millimetres and effectively invisible under the lip. A slim is around 34 by 10 millimetres, roughly twice the material, with a broader flavour release and the full strength ladder above it. The mini range is where a first pouch belongs; the slim range is where most people settle.
Remember that the S number moves with the format. Mini S2 is about 3 mg, slim S2 about 6 mg, so switching format changes the strength even when the label does not. The physical differences are covered in pouch sizes explained, and the flavour map for the brand sits in the ZYN guide.
How long a can lasts
A ZYN slim can holds 21 pouches and a mini can holds 20. At three or four pouches a day a can runs five to seven days, which makes a three-can order roughly a fortnight. This varies enormously from person to person, so treat it as arithmetic rather than a recommendation.
Cans keep best sealed, cool and out of direct sunlight, with the detail in how to store nicotine pouches. The full ZYN collection sits alongside background on the manufacturer in who makes ZYN, and the material itself is explained in what tobacco-free nicotine means.
One regulatory note worth knowing. Tobacco-free pouches fall outside the EU Tobacco Products Directive, so per-pouch strength ceilings differ by country and the S-levels available vary with them. In the United States the same products are regulated as non-tobacco nicotine products, with the agency's page on tobacco-free nicotine pouches setting out the detail. How much of a pouch is actually released was measured by Lunell and colleagues, and smoking figures for context are published by the World Health Organization.
Frequently asked questions
Which ZYN strength should a first-timer choose?
S1 or S2 in the mini format, which carry roughly 1.5 mg and 3 mg of nicotine per pouch. Both are gentle enough to tell you what the format feels like without dominating the first fifteen minutes.
Where exactly do you put a ZYN pouch?
Under the upper lip, tucked flat against the gum roughly above a canine tooth rather than dead centre. Off to one side it sits more comfortably, is less visible and is easier to leave alone.
How long do you leave a ZYN pouch in?
Between 20 and 40 minutes is the usual window, and ZYN states up to 60 minutes on the can. A first pouch is better taken out at around 10 to 15 minutes, since you can always place another later.
Do you spit when using ZYN?
No. ZYN pouches are tobacco-free and white, and they release very little liquid compared with traditional moist snus. Saliva is swallowed normally, which is one of the reasons the format works in situations where spitting would not.
Is a tingle under the lip normal?
Yes. A prickling or warm sensation in the first few minutes is the ordinary reaction to the pouch settling against the gum, and it usually eases as the pouch softens. If it stays uncomfortable, remove the pouch and try a lower strength next time.
How do you dispose of a used ZYN pouch?
In the lid. Every ZYN can has a sealed upper compartment designed to hold used pouches until you reach a bin. It keeps things tidy and means nothing needs to be wrapped in a napkin.
How long does a can of ZYN last?
A ZYN slim can holds 21 pouches and a mini can holds 20. At three or four pouches a day that is five to seven days per can, though this varies widely from person to person.
Should you choose ZYN Mini or Slim?
Mini for discretion and a gentler start, slim for a broader flavour release and the full strength range. A mini at a given S number carries roughly half the nicotine of a slim at the same number, because the pouch is about half the size.
