Nicotine Pouch Sizes Explained: Slim, Mini, Regular

PouchSpot Journal

Slim, mini and regular describe the shape of the pouch, not its strength. Size decides comfort, discretion and feel.

Last updated: August 2026 · Nicotine products are for adults 18+. Nicotine is an addictive substance.

What the format names mean

Nothing about the words slim, mini and regular is standardised. They are trade descriptions rather than defined measurements, and each manufacturer sets its own tolerances. Even so, the industry has converged closely enough that the figures below hold across most of Europe.

All three describe the same object: a small sealed sachet of plant fibre carrying flavour and nicotine, placed under the upper lip and left there. What changes is the footprint, and that decides how visible the pouch is, how firmly it sits against the gum, how much material it carries and, indirectly, how much nicotine it holds. A narrative review of the pouch literature sets out how wide that range runs. If the contents rather than the shape are the question, what is inside a nicotine pouch is the better starting point.

Each format, and who it suits

Mini

A mini is about the size of a grain of long rice, flattened slightly. Tucked high under the lip it is genuinely invisible, and most people stop noticing it within a minute. Less fibre means less material pressing on the gum and less to hold moisture, so a mini tends to feel drier and lighter throughout.

It suits three groups. Anyone trying the format for the first time, because the smaller pouch carries less nicotine. Anyone who wants complete discretion in a meeting or across a dinner table. And anyone switching to a lower strength than the slim they have been reaching for. The mini format collection gathers what is available, and the ZYN guide covers the deepest mini range on the market.

Slim

Slim is the European default and the shape most people picture. The long, narrow strip follows the natural curve between gum and lip, which is why it disappears so readily despite holding twice the material of a mini. It carries enough fibre for a rounded flavour arc and enough nicotine for the full strength ladder.

Slim is also where the variety lives: the slim format collection holds the large majority of every brand we carry, and brand overviews such as the VELO guide are effectively slim guides for that reason.

Regular

Regular, sometimes labelled original or large, is the inherited shape. It is the width of a traditional Swedish portion, close to a gram, and it fills the space under the lip in a way the other two do not. Some people prefer exactly that: a definite physical presence, a slower and broader release, a familiar feel from the leaf products described in our snus explainer. Sweden has lived with that shape longest and sits at the bottom of the European smoking table in the World Health Organization's figures, with national detail from the Public Health Agency of Sweden.

It has become uncommon in tobacco-free ranges. The white pouch category grew up alongside the slim shape and never needed the width, and the wider pouch is the most visible of the three. You will still meet it, mostly in traditional Scandinavian lines rather than modern tobacco-free ones.

Why size and strength are tangled together

This is the part that catches people out. Strength labels are often expressed relative to the weight of the pouch, so the same rating on two formats does not mean the same nicotine content. ZYN's range makes the point cleanly: Spearmint Mini S2 carries about 3 mg per pouch, Cool Mint Slim S2 about 6 mg. Same S number, twice the nicotine, because the slim pouch is twice the size.

Mini S1
About 1.5 mg per pouch. The lightest option in the catalogue.
Mini S2
About 3 mg per pouch. A common first choice.
Slim S2
About 6 mg per pouch. Same label as the mini above, double the content.
Slim S5
About 13.5 mg per pouch. Experienced territory.

So the honest reading of a can is two numbers, not one: format and rating together. The PouchSpot strength index lists milligrams per pouch across brands so the comparison can be made like for like, and the longer strength guide explains why the words on the front of the tin are the least reliable part of it. What a pouch holds is not what it releases, incidentally: pharmacokinetic work by Lunell and colleagues found roughly half the nicotine leaves the pouch, and a scoping review in Nicotine and Tobacco Research gathers what else is known.

How size changes the feel under the lip

Beyond nicotine content, size does three things you will notice. It sets how much surface area touches the gum, which affects the tingle in the first minutes. It sets how much moisture the pouch holds, which affects the release curve and whether anything runs. And it sets how long the flavour stays expressive.

A larger pouch presents more wetted surface, so the opening is broader and the flavour holds its shape longer. A mini gets going quickly, peaks a touch earlier and tapers sooner. None of this is dramatic, and moisture does at least as much work as size, which is the subject of dry versus moist pouches. If drip is the concern, which pouches drip least covers the driest formats, and how long a pouch lasts sets out realistic windows.

A note on fit

Mouths differ. A slim that sits invisibly for one person can feel obtrusive to another with a shallower lip line. If a slim never settles, a mini almost always will. The pouch finder asks about comfort and strength together.

Choosing a size

For a first pouch, take a mini at a low rating. It is small enough to forget about and light enough that the first fifteen minutes tell you something useful rather than something overwhelming. The beginners guide walks through that first sitting, and the ZYN walkthrough does the same for the brand most people start with.

Once the format is familiar, slim is where the range opens up, and most people settle there. Keep a milder tin alongside whatever you usually reach for, since switching to a lower strength on a long day is a normal adjustment. Regular is worth trying only if you actively want the wider footprint. More of the category is unpicked across the PouchSpot journal.

No format changes what nicotine is. It remains an addictive substance, and the German federal risk assessment of nicotine pouches is the most readable summary of what is and is not known. Tobacco-free pouches also sit outside the Tobacco Products Directive, so per-pouch limits vary by country and the European Commission's tobacco overview is where to watch for change.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between slim and mini nicotine pouches?

A slim pouch is a long, narrow strip of around 34 by 10 millimetres weighing roughly 0.6 to 0.7 grams. A mini is shorter and thinner, around 30 by 8 millimetres and roughly half the weight. The mini is less visible under the lip and usually holds less nicotine at the same strength label.

Are mini pouches weaker than slim pouches?

Usually, yes, even when the number on the can is the same. ZYN Spearmint Mini S2 holds around 3 mg of nicotine per pouch while ZYN Cool Mint Slim S2 holds around 6 mg. The S number describes strength relative to the pouch size, so a smaller pouch at the same rating carries less.

Which pouch size is best for a first time?

A mini at a low strength is the gentlest introduction. It is small enough to sit unnoticed while you learn what the format feels like, and it carries less nicotine than a slim of the same rating, which makes the first fifteen minutes easier to judge.

Why are most nicotine pouches slim?

Slim became the European default because it balances comfort and capacity. The narrow strip follows the curve of the gum without pushing the lip out, while still holding enough material for a full flavour release. Across the PouchSpot catalogue roughly three quarters of products are slim.

What is a regular or original size pouch?

Regular, sometimes called original or large, is the wider traditional portion of about 34 by 14 millimetres and close to a gram. It comes from the Swedish snus tradition and is now uncommon in tobacco-free ranges, where slim has largely replaced it.

Does pouch size change how long the flavour lasts?

It changes the shape of the release more than the ceiling. A larger pouch holds more flavour material and tends to stay expressive for longer, while a mini often peaks a little sooner and fades earlier. Moisture level matters at least as much as size.

Can you tell if someone has a pouch in?

With a mini, rarely. With a slim, only if you look closely while the person is talking. Regular size pouches are the most visible because of their width. All three are placed under the upper lip and need no spitting.
